Single Chip TFT LCD Driver for Mobile Applications

The most compact TFT LCD Driver IC, supporting QVGA resolution in the advanced smart phone market

(Hong Kong – 7 October, 2005) Solomon Systech Limited is proud to launch their single chip TFT LCD Driver IC, the SSD1279, which supports 240×320 (QVGA) resolution and 262K color, for smart phone systems.

The SSD1279 is a single chip solution, incorporating both gate and source driver blocks and a power management circuit. The SSD1279 communicates with common image processor, TFT graphic controller, powerful Baseband or application processor via RGB interface. This ensures speedy data transmission when using the CMOS/CCD camera in the smart phone system. The size of the SSD1279 is only 24.0 x 1.5mm2, making it is the simplest and the most compact solution for QVGA resolution that commercially available in the market. The small die can allows thinner contact ledge for the LCD module, allowing compact design for smart phones. Moreover, the SSD1279 offers a driving capacity of up to 4.0″ TFT LCD panel, the first single chip solution supporting a medium size application. Additionally, Solomon Systech’s advanced design technology achieves lower power consumption in the TFT LCD module system, one of the critical factors for all portable systems. In an actual measurement of a 2.2″, 240×320 QVGA display module, using Solomon Systech’s TFT driver SSD1279, the module power consumption at 262k color, 60Hz frame frequency, and line inversion, is only 6.9mW. These values mean Solomon Systech remains one of the most competitive TFT LCD driver suppliers in the global display IC market.

The Powerful Smart Phone System with RAM-less driver

The mobile phone has been evolving and improved by the addition of color display, video clip, camera function and PDA features. In order to cope with this demand on feature enhancement a new innovative mobile phone system has been created. The modern smart phone system not only includes the MCU and DSP blocks but also an image processor that assists with MPEG4 acceleration, JPEG Codec and the 2D/3D graphic engine. As an image processor already has sufficient display SRAM on chip only a RAM-less driver like the SSD1279 is required to optimize these smart phone system. This structure eliminates the duplication of memory in order to improve overall efficiency and cost of the system. SSD1279 is the most advanced and appropriate RAM-less solution for modern smart phone systems available and in the handset market this is likely to be the case well into the future.
